A good cold email bounce rate is under 2%, and anything above 3% should stop the campaign until the list is cleaned. Cold outreach bounces more than opt-in email because the addresses were sourced rather than volunteered, so unverified B2B lists commonly bounce at 7% or worse. That number matters more than open rate: mailbox providers read a rising bounce rate as a signal that you are guessing at addresses, and they throttle or block the domain that is doing the guessing.
This is the metric most teams check last and should check first. You can fix a weak subject line next week. A burned sending domain takes months.
What is a cold email bounce rate?
Bounce rate is the share of sent emails that the receiving server refused to deliver. If you send 1,000 emails and 30 come back undelivered, your bounce rate is 3%. The calculation is simple; what matters is the split between the two kinds of bounce, because they mean completely different things about your list.

A campaign with a 4% bounce rate that is almost all soft bounces from one throttling mail server is a different problem from a campaign with a 4% hard bounce rate, which means roughly one in every 25 addresses on your list is fictional.
What is a good cold email bounce rate?
Use these bands. They reflect what senders and deliverability teams treat as safe in 2026, not a vendor marketing number:

One honest clarification, because a lot of blog posts get this wrong: Google's published bulk sender requirements do not set a bounce-rate threshold. What Google publishes is a spam rate rule, keep it below 0.10% and never let it reach 0.30%, plus authentication and one-click unsubscribe requirements for high-volume senders. The bounce thresholds above are industry practice and a proxy for list quality, not a rule you can quote from a provider's documentation. Be skeptical of any article that tells you Google blocks at exactly 2% bounces; that number is repeated a lot and sourced to nothing.
Why cold emails bounce
Ranked by how often they are the actual cause:
- The address never existed. Pattern-guessed addresses (first.last@, f.last@, first@) are the single biggest source of hard bounces. Guessing works often enough to be tempting and fails often enough to wreck a domain.
- The person left. B2B contact data decays roughly 2 to 3% per month as people change jobs, which is why a list you bought in January bounces badly in July.
- The company is gone or renamed. Acquisitions and rebrands kill entire domains at once, and they show up as a cluster of bounces from the same company.
- Your authentication is broken. Missing or misaligned SPF, DKIM or DMARC gets messages rejected outright by strict receivers, and it looks like a list problem when it is really a DNS problem.
- A new domain sending too much, too soon. A fresh domain that jumps to 200 sends a day gets rate-limited, which surfaces as soft bounces and deferrals.
- Spam traps and catch-all domains. Catch-alls accept everything so they never bounce, which sounds good and is not: they hide bad addresses and can conceal recycled spam traps.
How to fix a high bounce rate
1. Verify the list before every send, not once
Run the list through a verification service immediately before the campaign, not when you built it. Verification decays like the data does. Remove hard-fail addresses, and decide deliberately what to do with "risky" and "catch-all" results: the safest policy is to exclude risky addresses entirely and cap catch-alls to a small share of any campaign.
2. Suppress every hard bounce permanently and automatically
A hard bounce should be added to a global suppression list the moment it arrives, across every campaign and every mailbox, not just the one that triggered it. Re-mailing an address that already hard bounced is the clearest possible signal to a receiving server that you are not paying attention.
3. Fix authentication before blaming the list
If bounces spiked suddenly rather than climbing gradually, suspect DNS, not data. Check that SPF resolves within the 10-lookup limit, that DKIM is signing with a 2048-bit key, and that DMARC is published and aligned. 4. Ramp volume instead of jumping to it
New domains and new mailboxes need weeks of gradual, warmed sending before they can carry real volume. 5. Stop guessing addresses
If a meaningful share of your list came from a pattern guesser rather than a verified source, that is the fix. Build the list from sources that confirm the address exists, then verify. Does bounce rate affect deliverability?
Yes, directly and quickly. Mailbox providers use bounce behavior as a proxy for whether you have permission and whether your list is real. A sustained hard bounce rate tells them you are mailing addresses you never confirmed, which is exactly what a spammer does, so they start deferring, filtering to spam, and eventually rejecting mail from your domain and IP. Unlike open rate, this is a signal the provider owns and trusts completely, because it is generated by their own servers.
How do you calculate cold email bounce rate?
Divide bounced emails by total emails sent, then multiply by 100. Track hard and soft bounces separately, and track it per sending domain and per mailbox rather than only at the campaign level. A campaign-wide 2% can hide one mailbox bouncing at 9%, and that mailbox is the one about to get your domain filtered. Per-mailbox tracking is how you catch a problem while it is still one mailbox.
What bounce rate is acceptable for a new sending domain?
Lower than for an established one. A domain with no sending history has no reputation buffer, so the first few hundred sends set the baseline a provider judges you against. Keep it under 1% on a new domain, which in practice means verifying aggressively and starting with your highest-confidence contacts rather than the bottom of the list.
The metric to watch alongside it
Bounce rate tells you whether the addresses are real. It says nothing about whether the message reached the primary inbox, which is why a campaign can bounce at 0.4% and still book nothing.
