What Is an AI SDR? What They Do and What They Cost
One label, three different products, and one of them does not send outbound email at all. What an AI SDR actually automates, why the 24/7 claim barely matters for email, and the per-contact math that decides whether it is worth it.

An AI SDR is software that does the sales development work a junior rep would do: build a prospect list, research each contact, write a personalized outbound email, send it, follow up and handle the first reply. That is the useful definition. The problem is that the label got attached to three genuinely different products between 2024 and 2026, and they are not substitutes for each other. One of them does not send outbound email at all.
So before anything else, work out which one a vendor is selling you.
What is an AI SDR?
In its strict sense, an AI SDR is an autonomous outbound agent. You give it an ideal customer profile, it sources contacts from a database it owns, researches each company for something worth mentioning, drafts a distinct email, sends it from mailboxes it manages, runs the follow-up cadence and works the first reply until a meeting is on the calendar. 11x sells this as Alice, Artisan sells it as Ava, and AiSDR sells it under its own name. This is what most people picture when they hear the term.
In practice the phrase also covers two other categories that get marketed with the same words.
| Category | What it actually does | Who sells it | How it is priced |
|---|---|---|---|
| Autonomous outbound agent | Owns the whole motion: list, research, copy, sending, replies | 11x (Alice), Artisan (Ava), AiSDR | Per contact researched, or quote only |
| AI-assisted sales engagement | Researches and drafts; a human keeps strategy and the send decision | Regie.ai, and cold email platforms including AutoMail | Per seat or per mailbox |
| Inbound AI agent | Works visitors already on your website and routes them to a booking flow | Qualified (Piper) | Quote only |
That third row is where people get hurt. Someone searches for AI SDR software, books a demo with an inbound agent, signs an annual contract and then discovers it has no mechanism for contacting a stranger. It is an excellent product for the job it does. It is just not outbound, and outbound is what the search term means to almost everyone typing it.
What does an AI SDR actually do?
It is worth noting that an AI SDR is one branch of a wider category. Every AI SDR is an AI sales agent, but most AI sales agents are not AI SDRs: the broader label also covers inbound website qualification, CRM hygiene and call support, and those are priced in units that have nothing to do with contacts researched.
Strip the category down and every product in it compresses the same step: turning a name into a researched, written, sent email. That breaks into a fairly predictable set of jobs.
- Sourcing or ingesting contacts that match an ICP you define
- Enriching and verifying those contacts so the send does not bounce
- Researching each account for a hook worth referencing in the first line
- Drafting the opening email and the follow-ups
- Scheduling sends across connected mailboxes at a pace that does not look automated
- Detecting replies and stopping the sequence when a human answers
- Classifying reply intent and pushing interested prospects to a booking link or a rep
Doing that by hand is genuinely expensive. A rep researching properly gets through maybe 30 to 40 prospects a day, and most of that time goes into reading a company website to find one sentence worth using. Automating it is real value, and it is why the category grew as fast as it did.
What is the difference between an AI SDR and an AI BDR?
Nothing meaningful in the software. SDR and BDR describe how a company splits its sales development team, usually inbound versus outbound, or by segment or region. Vendors pick whichever acronym their target buyers use internally. Every product marketed as an AI BDR in 2026 does the same jobs as the ones marketed as an AI SDR, and you should compare them directly rather than assuming the label signals a difference in capability.
Do AI SDRs actually work?
They work at the thing they automate and they do nothing for the thing that usually causes the problem. This is the distinction worth internalizing before you buy one.
An AI SDR does not decide who to email or what claim will make a stranger care. It executes the targeting and the positioning you hand it. If your reply rate is low because you are emailing the wrong segment, or because your offer is a feature list rather than a reason to take a meeting, the software will reproduce that message faster and to more people. On a young sending domain that is worse than doing nothing, because volume against low engagement is exactly the pattern mailbox providers use to decide you belong in spam. The tool amplifies whatever you feed it, in both directions.
The other claim worth deflating is 24/7 operation. It is a real advantage for inbound chat and for phone agents, where a lead goes cold in minutes and human coverage has gaps. For outbound email it is close to meaningless, because the binding constraint is not how many hours anyone is awake. It is mailbox capacity. A warmed inbox should carry roughly 20 to 50 sends a day, and you grow by adding mailboxes rather than by pushing the ones you have. Adding hours to a system limited by mailboxes changes nothing at all.
Can AI replace SDRs?
It replaces most of the research and drafting workload. It does not replace the judgment. Deciding which segment to attack this quarter, what claim will land with it, and when to abandon an angle after two weeks of flat replies is still a person's job, and it is the part that actually determines whether the program produces pipeline.
The replacement math also tends to be done badly. Comparing a $900 a month tool against a $70,000 SDR salary looks decisive until you list what the SDR did that the software does not: qualifying on a live call, handling an objection in real time, noticing that three prospects in a row raised the same concern, and telling you the list is wrong. What actually happens on teams getting value here is that one experienced operator runs a system that used to need three or four junior reps, and the headcount that remains is more senior rather than simply smaller.
If you work through that and conclude you want a person after all, the hiring loop itself is now largely automatable, from sourcing candidates to running structured first-round screening interviews before anyone on your team spends time on a call. The choice is not really software versus headcount. It is which parts of each you automate.
How much does an AI SDR cost?
Published pricing runs from $250 a month at the entry level to $2,500 a month for higher contact volumes, and per-seat platforms start at $180 per user with seat minimums that raise the real floor into four figures. Three of the five best known vendors publish nothing at all and route every tier to a demo. We read all five pricing pages first-party and put the figures in one table on the AI SDR software comparison, including the per-contact math and the seat minimums that do not appear in most roundups.
The single most important thing to check is the unit. Autonomous AI SDRs bill per contact researched, which puts your list size directly on the invoice. Sending software bills per seat or per mailbox and treats your contact count as your own business. Teams routinely compare a $900 per month agent against a $97 per month sending tool and conclude the agent is nine times the price, which is not a comparison at all. The agent price includes the list, the research and the copy. The question is whether those are worth about a dollar a contact to you.
Is an AI SDR worth it?
Do the arithmetic against your deal size rather than against a benchmark. At roughly $1.00 to $1.25 per researched contact, 800 contacts a month costs about $900. Assume a well-targeted list produces replies in the low single digits and that a meaningful share of positive replies become meetings, and you are looking at something in the range of five to fifteen meetings from that spend. If your average contract value is $40,000 and one meeting in eight closes, a single deal pays for more than a year. If your ACV is $3,000, the same spend rarely clears, and you are better off building the list yourself and paying for sending and deliverability instead.
The cost of an outsourced agency is worth pricing at the same time, because it sits in the same band and buys a different mix of strategy and execution. If you are choosing between platforms rather than models, our buyer's guide to cold email software walks through the questions that actually separate them, and the 2026 roundup covers the specific tools.
What an AI SDR will not fix
Three things, and each one will quietly cap the results of any tool in this category.
It will not fix a list that does not match your product. Enrichment makes a bad contact more detailed, not more relevant. It will not fix an offer that gives a stranger no reason to reply, because personalization changes the first line and not the proposition. And it will not fix sending infrastructure. If your domain is new, unauthenticated or unwarmed, an AI SDR just gets your messages filtered more efficiently. Authenticate every sending domain with SPF, DKIM and aligned DMARC, warm each mailbox for two to three weeks before it touches a real campaign, and spread volume across a pool of inboxes. That work comes first regardless of which product you buy, and no agent in this category will do it for you retroactively.
Get those three right and the automation compounds. Get them wrong and you have bought a faster way to be ignored.
